Can bingeing Netflix really help you learn a new language?

Want to feel less guilty about binge watching your favourite shows?

Well now you can…..

Science proves that watching subtitled Netflix can improve language acquisition. By watching dual subtitled foreign language shows you are tackling 2 skills at once: listening and reading! If you want to boost your vocabulary further check out Language Reactor for Netflix.

Watching foreign language Netflix isn’t all about the language skills though. You can also pick up cultural clues and dig deeper into perceived societal issues.

Our top tips for Netflixing and learning:

    1. Find a show you like (it’s supposed to be enjoyable  – don’t punish yourself by watching genres that make you queasy!)
    2. Keep an open mind… you never know you might become a telenovela addict after episode 60!
    3. Start a vocabulary diary to make a note of new and interesting words.
    4. Install apps like Language Reactor so you can see dual subtitles and make the most of seeing and hearing the language.
    5. Turn off subtitles if you are at an intermediate level and see how much language you are recognising.

Our team has compiled a list of their favourite foreign language shows below.
