Ever felt bilingual after a tipple?
If you’ve noticed that your speaking skills improve whilst drinking, then you’re not wrong. A study conducted in 2017 found that alcohol consumption improved speaking and specifically, pronunciation skills more than those who hadn’t had a drink (Renner, Kersbergen, Field, Werthmann 2017). Interestingly, they found that participants of the study didn’t think they had improved after drinking.
The study’s authors say it’s possible that a low-to-moderate dose of alcohol “reduces language anxiety” and therefore increases proficiency. “This might enable foreign language speakers to speak more fluently in the foreign language after drinking a small amount of alcohol,” they conclude. Cheers to that we say!
Happy drinking and learning.
